How rare is a nautilus?

Until recently the nautilus were thought to be rare animals occurring at only a few sites, but are now known to occur throughout most of the tropical Indo-Pacific region. Following the K-Pg extinction event most nautiloid species went extinct, while members of Coleoidea managed to survive. Following the mass extinction, the nautilus became the only extant species of nautiloids.
