Why is nautilus so rare?

Following the K-Pg extinction event most nautiloid species went extinct, while members of Coleoidea managed to survive. Following the mass extinction, the nautilus became the only extant species of nautiloids. Today, living nautiluses are limited to a few species belonging to one family and two genera. Of the eleven named species, only four species are well established and easily distinguishable. Nautilus are extremely different in many ways from all other living cephalopods in the sub-class Coleoidea.

What is the lifespan of a nautilus?

Unlike other cephalopods, nautiluses are relatively long-lived, reaching ages of 15 to 20 years, or more. They grow slowly, maturing around 10 to 15 years of age, and produce a small number of eggs that require at least a year-long incubation period. Cool facts As a nautilus grows, it gains more living space by building new chambers connected to the old ones; adult shells have 30 chambers. The nautilus is the only cephalopod with an external shell. Much like zebras, nautiluses can be individually identified based on their striped shell patterns.
